The Khaptad Plateau is charac­terized by extensive grasslands (musk deer habitat) surrounded by densely forested ridges (tiger habitat). Out of the thirty-five dif­ferent types of forest communities recognized in Nepal, sixteen occur in the Khaptad region. Rare species of medicinal plants and oaks, like Quercus leucotricephala and Quer­cus floribund, are found here. The rare bird, called the Black Chinned Yhina, is known only in Khaptad National Park. Over 260 species of birds, Common Langur, Himalayan Black Beer, Musk Deer, Barking Deer, Yellow Throated Marten, Ghoral, Leopard, Wild Dog, Wild Boar, and occasionally a Snow Leopard are reported in this park. The far west is called the far west because of its distance from the rest of the country. Actually it is only 600 km away from Katmandu but due to geographical terrain, it takes many days to reach the interior parts of far west. Suklaphanta National park at Mahendranagar is a nature and wildlife enthusiast's dream. Betkot Lake about 20 km from Mahendranagar is a great place to visit, though it is laking in infrastructure. Dadeldhura is the queen of the hills in this region with better climate than Nanital, a well known hill station of India. In the summer the city is "Naturally air conditioned", which makes it a great gateway when the temperature in Terai crosses 40 degrees centigrade. Silgadhi in Doti district offers extra ordinary views, especially of Dipayal and Seti River. Simarly Baitadi,Darchula,Bajhang and Bajura each offer visitors wonderful memories of graceful life and surroundings that is as extreme as it is beautiful.Kailali,one of the most fertile lands of the country is a great winter residence.
